UBC MBAN

Hands-on learning

Learning experiences

You will learn from academic and business leaders alike, and with our small cohort, will benefit from face-to-face time with your instructors. Our “flipped classroom” approach, where essential knowledge is delivered outside the classroom and class time becomes grounds for active engagement, will help bring the modern business world to life as you learn.

Internships

UBC MBAN students will participate in either a 8-16 week internship where they will work on a significant analytical challenge faced by an organization or a personal research project. Apply your analytical competencies to help cutting-edge companies find optimal solutions to complex problems, develop robust decision support tools and communicate technical results and recommendations to management.

Case studies, competitions and clubs

Throughout the program students are given the opportunity to analyze real world case studies, collaborate with industry partners, and have the opportunity to participate in national and global industry case competitions. Here are some examples of what recent cohorts have participated in:

Using Text-Mining Approaches to Build Social Media Analytics

As part of one recent project, UBC MBAN students explored how to apply structure to large unstructured datasets found on social media. By conducting in-depth analyses, they distilled this valuable data into invaluable insights.

Forecasting Energy for the Vancouver International Airport (YVR)

While pursuing a UBC MBAN, students collaborate with prominent companies across a number of sectors. Using Vancouver International Airport as a case study, students forecasted monthly energy use, a necessity for the airport’s budget planning and contract negotiations.

Analytics Case Competition

During this competition weaved into the UBC MBAN program, students have an opportunity to work with top-tier companies such as SAS and Google, gaining practical experience and solid understanding how analytics affects business decisions.

MBAN Student Society

Not only does the UBC MBAN Student Society represent MBAN students in academic and administrative matters, it also builds community, facilitates a positive cohort experience and provides students with the opportunity to hone their leadership skills by organizing networking and social events.

Google Hackathon

See what happens when students are given three days to offer a solution to a real-time analytics challenge presented by Google. Students were tasked with forming their own teams, and they were also offered personalized coaching from Google engineers throughout the event.
