Get involved as an alumni volunteer with UBC Sauder


Through the generous gift of time, resources and expertise, our alumni volunteers help enrich, promote and strengthen the student experience and build an engaged and collaborative UBC Sauder community.

Explore volunteer opportunities

Event Speaker

Share your stories and words of advice to student or alumni audiences by giving a keynote presentation, workshop or participating on a panel. Speaking opportunities exist through student-run conference and club events, orientation programs, the Business Career Centre and UBC Sauder’s Alumni Engagement Office.

Time commitment: 2 – 3 hours*

Please note that speaking opportunities can vary widely and may not be as readily available as other volunteer opportunities. 

Networking Delegate

Network with students and share industry knowledge and insights from your career journey. Help students with their professional development through career exploration conversations.

Time commitment: 2 – 3 hours


On-site Logistics 

Assist with event registration, provide directional guidance to attendees, offer support to staff members, facilitate networking opportunities, and help with various logistical tasks to ensure the smooth running of the event. 

Time commitment: 1 – 4 hours depending on the duration of the event and the role required to support.
 

Mentor

Connect 1:1 with a student or alumni to provide advice and guidance, and create an on-going relationship of learning, dialogue and growth.

Time commitment: can vary from being a one-time 1–2-hour meeting to 4 or more hours over the course of 8 months.


Judge or Case Competition Coach

Sit on a judging panel to assess and provide feedback to student teams competing in case competitions and/or entrepreneurship pitch competitions.

Each year, UBC Sauder sends teams of students across Canada and around the world to compete in case competitions. Alumni coaches play an integral role in their success by attending case practices throughout the year to provide feedback, resources and knowledge. 

Time commitment for judges: 1 – 2 hours
Time commitment for coaches: up to 8 hours per month over the course of 4 months


Recruitment Support

Join the Recruitment and Admissions Team to support recruiting the next generation of students. Recruitment support entails speaking about your experience with prospective students, in person, online or in groups at events and building connections with UBC Sauder staff and faculty. Opportunities will range from Vancouver, across Canada, and cities internationally. 

Time commitment: In-person meetings may vary from 30 minutes; Events vary from 2-4 hours between August – April.
 

Industry Case Study Project

Prepare a real-life business challenge for students to work on in a case competition. You'll have the chance to work with faculty and/or students to prepare and judge your case submission. Competition size varies and some have the option for sponsorship recognition.  

Time commitment: typically a 4-10 hours of prep and interaction with faculty/students

Industry Case Study Assignment

Prepare a real-life business challenge for students to work on in a classroom setting. 

Time commitment: typically a 1-2 hours of prep and interaction with faculty


Classroom Guest Speaker 

Join a class as a guest lecturer to showcase your experience. 

Time commitment: typically a 1 hour engagement in the classroom and about 1 hour of prep work
 

Career Exploration

Connect one-on-one with a UBC Sauder student to help them explore their career path. These students are considering a number of careers and may be in the early stages of decision making.

Time commitment: typically a 30 to 60 minute activity, limited to 2 per month


Hiring Conversations

Connect one-on-one with a UBC Sauder student who is interested in your industry, company or department.

Time commitment: typically a 30 to 60 minute activity, limited to 2 per month
 

Contribute to the growth of our alumni community by organizing an event in your city or supporting one nearby! Responsibilities may vary, but often include assisting with event setup and teardown, managing attendee registration, directing participants, and providing general logistical support.

Time commitment: may vary from 1-4 hours
