The Dhillon Centre for Business Ethics is pleased to announce this year’s call for applications for its “Research into Business for the Social Good Grant”. This grant will support and encourage research involving graduate students in the domain of business for social good. The deadline for submissions is July 15, 2020.

Objective:

To support and encourage academic research involving graduate students in the domain of business for social good.

Eligibility:

The Principal Investigator must be a tenue track faculty member at UBC and the Co-Applicant must be a graduate student.

Purpose:

The purpose of this initiative is to support early-stage and innovative research examining how business can be a force for social good. We define the social good as actions that benefit society and the individuals that live within in it. This can include actions on behalf of businesses that give back in terms of fostering social responsibility, social impact, and sustainability. Work examining social responsibility, cause marketing, impact investing, social entrepreneurship, ethical decision making/purchasing, charitable giving, and positive workplace citizenship behaviours are some examples of relevant topics, although we are open to other topics that are related to business ethics, social responsibility, social impact, and sustainability.

Details:

The grant is in a total amount of $4,000, $2,000 of which is a stipend to be awarded to a graduate student and $2,000 that is to be allocated towards research costs.

Decision Criteria:

The proposals will be reviewed by a committee and decisions will be based on:

  • The quality of the application: Priority will be given to projects that the reviewers deem to have a high likelihood of leading to published research and/or additional grant funding.
  • Relevance and impact of the research: Preference will be topics that appear to be societally-relevant and that are strongly linked to the theme of business for social good.
  • Student training and experience: Preference will be given to applicants that explicitly outline how the graduate student will receive specific training and experience that is relevant to their degree and their future career.

Application Procedure:

Applicants should write a brief summary of the proposed research, including the research question, methodology, and theoretical and practical implications. In addition, the proposal should clearly outline the role of the graduate student and discuss the specific training/experience that the research project will provide. The proposal should be two pages double spaced (12-point font) maximum.

The deadline for applications is July 15th, 2020 and they can be emailed to Kate White at Katherine.White@sauder.ubc.ca.

Decisions will be made by a panel and will be announced on August 30th, 2020.
