This year, UBC Sauder welcomes ten new lecturers and tenure-track faculty to the school. In this article, we introduce you to Mehran Jamshidi, Lecturer in the Accounting and Information Systems Division.

Where are you from, and what brought you to UBC Sauder?

I am originally from Iran. My journey to UBC Sauder was driven by a passion for academia and a dedication to enhancing the educational experience for students. My extensive background in Management Information Systems (MIS) and Project Management led me to explore opportunities at UBC Sauder, where I saw the potential to contribute to the field and collaborate with fellow educators and researchers.

What are your areas of research or your fields of expertise, and how did you get into this field?

My areas of expertise encompass Management Information Systems (MIS), Project Management, Computer Systems, as well as Educational Leadership. I have been deeply involved in these fields for over 25 years, starting from my educational journey in Computer Software Engineering to my professional and leadership roles in engineering, project management, and education. My passion for technology and its application in solving complex problems drew me into this field. In addition to the above-mentioned areas, I am conducting research pertaining to the impact of professional certifications on the career trajectories of skilled immigrants in Canada.

What continues to fuel your research or interest in these areas?

The ever-evolving nature of technology and its profound impact on businesses and society continue to inspire my research and interest in MIS and Project Management. I am driven by the opportunity to explore innovative solutions, share knowledge, and contribute to the development of dynamic learning environments for students. My research is dedicated to bridging the gap between technology, education, and the professional advancement of skilled immigrants in Canada.

What inspires you to teach?

Teaching provides me with the opportunity to impart knowledge, inspire future leaders, and make a positive impact on students' lives. Witnessing the growth and development of my students as they navigate complex subjects and embark on their careers is a constant source of inspiration.

What’s one of the most interesting things you’ve discovered through your research or through your educational journey?

One of the most fascinating discoveries in my educational journey is the transformative power of technology. It can revolutionize industries, drive innovation, enhance the quality of life, and address challenges in equity, diversity, and inclusion. This realization fuels my commitment to exploring how technology can be harnessed for positive change.

What do you believe is the future of your industry?

The future of MIS and Project Management lies in the integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and cybersecurity. These fields will continue to evolve, presenting opportunities and challenges. Adaptation, lifelong learning, and a focus on ethical and sustainable practices will be crucial for success.

Can you tell us an interesting fact about yourself?

In addition to my academic and professional pursuits, I've also held leadership roles in the Project Management Institute (PMI), Canadian West Coast Chapter, serving as President and VP of Education from 2015 to 2022. Additionally, I'm enthusiastic about pursuing my private pilot's license, fulfilling a long-held dream of flying.

What are you most looking forward to in Vancouver?

I am excited to immerse myself in Vancouver's vibrant academic and cultural scene. I look forward to connecting with colleagues, students, and the community, fostering meaningful collaborations, and exploring the natural beauty of the city and its surroundings.
